News:
Metatopia Joins Walker Art gallery Collection 2012.
John Moores Painting Prize 2010 exhibitor Nick Fox has gifted his prizewinning painting Metatopia to the Walker Art Gallery.Metatopia was one of four other prizewinners in 2010. It goes on display next to the 2010 winner, Spectrum Jesus by Keith Coventry and joins the gallery’s outstanding collection of contemporary art.The painting forms part of a unique display which traces the last 55 years of the John Moores Painting Prize, and in doing so represents the shifts and trends of over half a century of British painting.
Metatopia is a fascinating and enigmatic work. Layers of mirror-like polish obscure the imagery below, drawing the viewer in closer. The painting appears decorative at first, drawing upon Victorian visual culture to suggest love and romance. However further inspection also reveals forbidden pleasures, secrecy and taboo.

“According to the art critic Jan Verwoert, artists in their studio are like Joan of Arc hearing voices and drawn to higher callings. This show is looking at the work of a group of artists whose practice is inhabited and fed by history, the presence of their heroes, peers and other monuments of the Art Pantheon. These ‘phantoms’ are particularly present within a painting context where the weight of tradition is overbearing.
Sometimes consciously invited, sometimes fortuitous or accidental these presences in the studio provide fruitful discussions that reflect a problematic at work. The work exhibited here is not the expression of a movement or genre but rather a selection by a common sensitivity.” Curated by artists Julian Brown and Claude Vergez.

International Print Biennale 2011
Hatton Galery, Newcastle 17 Sep - 19 Nov 2011
Following the success of 2009's Northern Print Biennale, the Northern Print International Print Biennale 2011 highlights the diversity of contemporary printmaking.
Jointly hosted by the Hatton Gallery, Laing Art Gallery and Northern Print, this exhibition is the centrepiece of the Biennale, featuring invited artists alongside works selected by an international panel of curators, artists and printmakers.
The exhibition at the Hatton includes artists from more than ten countries working in a wide range of techniques and materials.
Artists at the Hatton include Nick Fox and James Hugonin.
Echo 2011
Marking a clear break from Fox’s floriographic references, and Referencing the speech-deprived nymph of Greek mythology, stricken such that her only utterances were a repeat of those words last uttered by others, Echo (2011) muses upon the spiritual panacea of moonlight and explores the physical instability that comes as a result of rejection and loss. Situated in the modesty of darkness, this constellation of varying sized fused glass discs are printed with delicate drawings of the artist’s body. The installation of fragile silvery orbs is coupled with live sound, reflecting and magnifying the personal, but otherwise inaudible echoes of longing and desire.
